Someone Else’s Shoes: Playing with Persona
Charlotte Lit @ hygge Belmont   |   933 LOUISE AVE STE 101   |   CHARLOTTE, NC 28204-2299

This class explores poems with unconventional points of view, ranging from classical myths to historical figures to inanimate objects.

Drawing from the well of the writer’s life can be a wonderful practice—but at times, it can be a tiring one. What about writing what you don’t know? In this masterclass, we’ll give a close reading to poems with unconventional points of view, ranging from classical myths to historical figures to inanimate objects. We’ll talk about preparatory brainstorming and research that makes a voice convincing, and consider the ethics of writing outside your own identity. An open conversation period will give folks who have already experimented with persona a chance to discuss their experiences. We’ll close with a generative prompt that gets you ready to write your own persona poems.

ONLINE CLASS: Spotlight Discussion: Louise Glück and her Legacy (2407)
One Sunday: February 25 (2024) from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET Online

Price: $60.00 (10% off for members)
Lecture and Discussion. This live class will be recorded and available for later viewing.

In her lifetime, Louise Glück (1943–2023) won many accolades, including the 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature. Yet her legacy as a teacher and judge of literary prizes rivals her body of work in its defining influence on American poetry. This two-hour seminar will discuss foundational elements of Glück’s aesthetic and her most beloved books, before moving on to consider three collections that she chose for the Yale Series of Younger Poets during her time as the judge: Richard Siken’s Crush (2004 winner), Fady Joudah’s The Earth in the Attic (2007 winner), and Katherine Larson’s Radial Symmetry (2010 winner). Not surprisingly, these books are in dialogue with Glück’s wit and intellect, her subversive takes on intimacy, and her close attention to the natural world. Advance familiarity with the poets is appreciated but not required; all levels of expertise are welcome. One Sunday: February 25 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET Online
